Maria Kontou

Maria Kontou is Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology in the field of Protein Chemistry. She graduated from the Department of Chemistry of the University of Athens, with a PhD in Biochemistry from the Department of Chemistry of the University of Patras. She carried out postdoctoral studies at the University of Warwick, UK, and the University of Florida, USA. Since 2004 she is a faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Thessaly, Greece. She is the Chair of the Department’s Alumni Affairs Committee and a member of the Department’s Outreach & Community Liaison Committee. Her research interests focus on the study of protein structure-action relationship and the study of blood coagulation mechanisms. Her scientific writing includes 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals with 531 citations, 30 conference papers and has an h-index of 11. Her educational work includes the organization and teaching of the courses General Chemistry for Life Sciences, Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology. At the postgraduate level, she is involved in teaching the courses Biochemistry of Nutrition, Qualitative and Quantitative Methods of Analysis – Biomarkers, Molecular Diagnosis of Genetic and Infectious Diseases, Biochemical and Molecular Diagnostics in the postgraduate programs of TBB. She has participated in 5 competitive research projects in one of which she was a coordinator.
